Business Development Manager – Europe

The Business Development Manager for Europe (including the UK) will cover the full business development lifecycle, proactively finding and following up on leads, running the sales process and managing accounts post-sale. As part of our commercial team and with support from colleagues in application sciences, research and legal, you will be responsible for growing our customer base, retaining current accounts and meeting revenue targets. You will work with organisations ranging from multi-national companies to early-stage startups, leveraging your background from chemistry, biology or related life sciences, your understanding of computational approaches, and experience from a previous business development role to build new relationships.

The successful candidate might be based in the UK, Germany, or France, with regular travel to the headquarters in Cambridge, UK, along with visits to customer sites and conferences (up to 25%) across Europe.

Responsibilities and Objectives

  • Identify and validate new opportunities to expand our customer base and develop new relationships, especially within the vibrant biotech community.
  • Leverage your network and use inside sales, databases, networking events and other resources to identify new leads.
  • Independently plan and perform the sales process, managing multiple opportunities and projects simultaneously. Take a detail-oriented approach to track opportunities in our CRM platform and organise the related documents.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of our software products and their value to research organisations within the pharmaceutical and related sectors. Demonstrate the software workflows and the value they bring via in-person or web-meetings with customers. Work with Optibrium’s subject-matter experts where appropriate.
  • Proactively support existing accounts, nurture customer relationships, and generate additional business opportunities for license expansion and cross-selling. Work with our application science team to offer customer training.
  • As part of the commercial team, contribute to developing the commercial strategy and campaigns.
  • Provide timely feedback to our UK-based product development team from customers regarding bugs or potential feature enhancements to guide future product development and communicate progress to customers.
  • Represent Optibrium at trade shows, partnering meetings and other conferences.

Business Development Manager – North America

The Business Development Manager for North America will cover the full business development lifecycle, proactively finding and following up on leads, running the sales process and ongoing account management. The successful candidate should be based in the Boston, MA, San Francisco, CA or San Diego, CA areas with regular travel to customer sites and conferences (up to 25%) across North America and to our headquarters in Cambridge, UK. US citizenship or work authorisation is required.

Director of Research

With a track record of peer-reviewed scientific research translated into successful products, and an investment secured in February 2021, we are excited to be recruiting a Director of Research, who will lead our Research team to develop and apply ground-breaking new methods in predictive modelling and machine learning methods for drug discovery.

Main Priorities of the Role:

  • Lead the Research team to develop novel methods, including quantum mechanical (DFT and semi-empirical) and machine learning, to improve the productivity and efficiency of drug discovery, consistent with customer needs and the company’s strategy
  • As a member of the company’s senior management team, help to guide the company’s R&D strategy
  • Work closely with the Development team to ensure the translation of scientific innovation into scientifically rigorous, valuable, and compelling products for our customers
  • Support members of the Research team working with customers on projects to apply our innovative methods to their drug discovery challenges. Ensure that insights gained from these projects inform our internal research and development
  • Retain and recruit excellent members of the Research team and support them to achieve their objectives, consistent with the Research team’s and company’s objectives
  • Work closely with the Commercial team to communicate our scientific innovations in a clear and scientifically accurate way and support our customer’s effective use of our products
  • Represent the company’s scientific innovations and products in a clear and engaging way to the scientific community at conferences and in meetings with current and potential customers

We would expect you to have:

  • A PhD in chemistry, computational chemistry, cheminformatics, machine learning or a related field
  • A track record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
  • Experience of scientific management in a commercial environment

C++ Software Engineer

If you enjoy working in C++ on client- and server-side code development, then our multiple opportunities in our cheminformatics and computational chemistry software development team could suit you well. This is a chance for you to further enhance or extend our product range, writing clean, maintainable code with a true commitment to testing. A flair for developing user-centric GUI designs with a good balance of power and usability will make you very popular with us and our customers.

To excel in this role, you will be able to identify and choose software architectures, class and library designs that have an appropriate clarity and flexibility. Clearly solid software development experience and skills in C++ are a must, use of Qt will allow you to hit the ground running.

Research Scientist – Bioinformatics/Cheminformatics

We are looking for a Research Scientist to work collaboratively within our Research Team to develop and validate methods for SAR analysis and modelling of peptides and other biological macromolecules for drug discovery – translating our success from small molecules.

Your main responsibilities include:

  • Deliver prototypes with excellent proof-of-concept
  • Collaborate with our software engineers to develop high-quality products that address our users’ challenges in discovering new medicines
  • Publish high-quality peer-reviewed papers to highlight the rigor and quality of our scientific research
  • Present your work in a clear and engaging way at conferences and in webinars
  • Support our Sales and Marketing team to clearly and accurately convey the science underlying our products

Product Manager

If you have a track record of software product management, we have a great opportunity for you to build on our success in translating cutting-edge scientific research into successful products. We are looking for a Product Manager who is passionate about creating novel software products that engage customers. You will need to work collaboratively with all areas of our business, as well as our customers as part of our Product Team, to design, build and deliver software products that fulfil the company’s vision.

Your main responsibilities include:

  • Gaining a deep understanding of the drug discovery market to identify and fill product gaps and generate new ideas that help our customers to discover new medicines
  • Creating buy-in for the product vision internally, as well as with external partners
  • Developing product positioning strategies
  • Translating product strategies into detailed requirements and designs
  • Scoping and prioritising products and features based on business and customer impact
  • Collaborating with the research and software engineering teams to deliver high-quality software on schedule
  • Driving product launches including working with the marketing and business teams, executives, and other product management team members
  • Evaluating promotional plans to ensure that they are consistent with product strategy and that the message is conveyed effectively
  • Maintaining the product roadmap and acting as a product evangelist to build awareness and understanding
  • Representing the company by visiting customers to solicit feedback on our products and services

Ideally you will have the following experience:

Chief Commercial Officer

With a track record of strong growth (25-30% year-on-year) and investments secured in February 2021 and June 2022, we are excited to be recruiting a Chief Commercial Officer, who will be responsible the success of all commercial aspects of the business. You will be responsible for driving all global sales, customer success and marketing activities and developing commercial strategy in line with Company’s goals.

As the Chief Commercial Offer, you will be responsible for:

  • Working with other members of the Executive Team and Optibrium’s Board to develop a company strategy and annual budget:
    • Drive ARR growth of >2x by end of 2024 based on current and new product portfolio
  • Developing and executing a coherent sales and marketing strategy in line with the broader company strategy
  • Owning Optibrium’s marketing efforts and budget to drive demand for our innovative scientific software platforms and establish corporate positioning and thought leadership, including:
    • Working with the R&D department and external consultants to create and communicate clear, compelling, and scientifically accurate messaging describing the value propositions of our products and the company brand;
    • Creating and running innovative campaigns for target industries, market segments and roles; and
    • Defining and deploying multiple marketing tactics as needed, including web content, email campaigns, webinars, seminars, white papers, case studies, etc.
  • Developing and managing sales and customer success tactics to achieve agreed targets for sales to new customers and renewal rates for current customers, including effective processes for:
    • Sales, evaluations and deal closing; and
    • Retention and upselling of customers
  • Collaboratively agreeing on a suite of commercial KPIs across the marketing, sales and account management groups in support of the strategy to drive ARR growth and ensure delivery on these KPIs, including:
    • Putting in place effective sales and marketing systems and processes that enable the performance of the team as a whole and individually to be targeted and monitored;
    • Determining pricing policy; and
    • Providing long term forecasts for product and service sales
  • Providing senior leadership of the international commercial team, including:
    • Effectively managing team members in line with Company policies and procedures;
    • Recruiting and retaining high-quality teams members in line with the agreed budget and company goals;
    • Agreeing appropriate, measurable targets for each team member and assess performance regularly; and
    • Ensuring the personal development and effective training of all team members
  • Forming and nurturing relationships with collaborators, technical partners and distributors
  • Working with the R&D teams to guide product development strategy based on a strong understanding of the market. Ensuring customer feedback is communicated in a clear and timely manner
  • Representing the Sales, Customer Success and Marketing functions at Executive and Board levels
  • Representing the Company in an engaging manner to customers, investors, and the wider community
